It isn’t loose dirt that rinses away; it’s a living film with a protective outer layer, which is exactly why running an ordinary cycle doesn’t shift it. The same principle explains why grout lines and window tracks go strange in humid rooms even when the visible surfaces around them are spotless.
When those bacteria break down trapped fats and proteins with limited oxygen available, they produce sulphur compounds. Sulphur compounds are the reason the smell reads as faintly eggy or drain-like rather than simply “dirty.” Your nose is extremely good at detecting these at very low concentrations — which is why you can smell something that a visual inspection completely fails to find.

Worth checking while you’re down there: spin the lower spray arm with your finger. It should turn freely. Then check that the small holes along it aren’t blocked with debris or limescale. Directly beneath the filter is the sump — the small basin where water collects before the pump sends it out. Fine sediment, grease and detergent residue settle here over time, and because it’s below the filter, cleaning the filter alone doesn’t clear it. Beyond the sump is the drain hose, which develops its own internal biofilm. This is where most home cleaning genuinely reaches its limit, and it’s fine to admit that. The hose typically loops upward before connecting to the sink waste or the disposal, and that upward loop exists for a reason: it stops sink water flowing backwards into your machine. If the hose has been installed flat, sagging, or without that high loop, waste water can sit in it or drift back into the tub — and that produces a much stronger smell than biofilm alone.
A quick diagnostic: after a finished cycle, look at the floor of the tub. A small amount of moisture is normal. A visible pool of standing water is not, and it points at drainage rather than hygiene. Quick cycles trade both, and are designed for lightly soiled loads only.
Fats behave badly at lower temperatures. They don’t fully emulsify, so instead of leaving with the waste water, a thin greasy film redistributes across internal surfaces and settles in the sump. Over months, this becomes the food supply for everything described above. If your household runs eco or quick for every load, including the roasting tray and the curry pot, that’s a very plausible explanation for a machine that smells despite looking clean.
You don’t need to abandon the eco setting. Running one hotter or longer cycle regularly — with a genuinely dirty load, since running a hot cycle on nothing is mostly a waste — resets the internal grease situation. Think of it the way you’d think about a proper seasonal deep clean for a home: routine maintenance handles the everyday, but occasionally you need the heavier pass.

Why Plastic Containers Smell Worse Than Glass

Run it more often, not less. Counterintuitive, but a dishwasher sitting full of dirty dishes for four days is a sealed container of decomposing food. If you can’t fill it, most machines have a rinse-only option that costs very little water and stops residue drying onto surfaces.
Use rinse aid, and salt if your machine takes it. Rinse aid helps water sheet off rather than beading, which means less residual moisture everywhere. Machines with a salt compartment use it to regenerate an internal water softener, which reduces scale — and scale gives biofilm more surface to anchor to.
