When is Eid Al-Adha celebrated?
Eid al-Adha, also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice” is to be celebrated on June 28, 29, and 30 following Arafat Day, which is expected to take place on June 27 but could be subjected to change depending on relevant moon sightings.
1. Learn about the significance of Eid al-Adha.
Educate yourself about the importance and meaning of Eid al-Adha in Islamic tradition. To do that, you can start by delving into the story of Prophet Ibrahim and his willingness to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to Allah. What does his willingness signify? What is the relevance of these faithful actions in the celebrations of Eid Al-Adha? Asking yourselves these questions can lead you to an understanding of the true meaning of this event and why it is being celebrated to this day.
2. Engage in acts of prayer and worship.
At the dawn of the first day of Eid Al-Adha, you can attend a communal prayer along with other worshippers who will pray at this time. During the festival of sacrifice, you can spend your time engaging in personal worship, reading the Quran, and praying.
3. Repent, reflect, and forgive.
You can use this day to seek forgiveness from Allah because the festival of sacrifice is also for repentance and reflection. Reflect on your past actions and transgressions solemnly, and take these moments of solitude to connect with Allah while contemplating the lessons and values of Eid Al-Adha.
Aside from asking for forgiveness, forgiving those who have wronged you and mending relationships are also part of this celebration. Making peace with all those who have hurt you is one of the wonderful parts of Eid Al-Adha festivities.
4. Help the less fortunate.
Eid al-Adha can be celebrated through acts of generosity and charity. It is a day for sacrifice and selflessness, so if it is within your means, helping the needy is an important part of this holiday that you can do. Whether it is food or essentials, give those that you can to the less fortunate during this time. Giving back to the community is an essential aspect of this celebration.
5. Prepare a Qurbani (sacrifice).
Conducting a ritual sacrifice is one of the ways to remember Prophet Ibrahim’s acts of piety and obedience towards Allah and how he rewarded the prophet’s sincere beliefs in kind. If you are financially capable, performing the sacrifice of a ritually acceptable animal during Eid Al-Adha is one of the ways you can adhere to the celebration of this festival. Said ritually acceptable animals are the following and nothing else: goats, cows, bulls, buffalo, camels, and sheep of a healthy disposition. Divide the sacrifice equally among family members, relatives, friends, and the needy. Giving away a portion of the sacrifice to the less fortunate is a big part of this celebration, as it is an act of selflessness and sacrifice to help others.
